Hard to believe but 20 years after this flimsy seaplane turned up on the beach at Eastney in 1919, the jet age began.
On August 27, 1939, a German Heinkel He 178, designed by Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain, made the first jet flight in history.
This is just one of a series of lovely old pictures of Portsmouth from reader Barry Cox’s superb collection.
