Mill which gave Portsmouth dockyard workers their daily bread
Although born in Gosport in 1852, many of Snape’s works were made in Portsmouth and around the harbour.
Today’s five drawings are from Portsmouth.
Snape lived in Spring Garden Lane, Gosport, near the old railway station, and was associated with the Gosport area all his life.

Hide AdIn 1922 he was commissioned to design the seal for the newly-created borough of Gosport.
In 1923 he was chosen to give the speech of welcome to the 91st annual conference of the British Medical Association which was beng held in Portsmouth.
He died in 1930 and one of his most famous paintings, of Forton Creek, hangs in Gosport town hall.
