A spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘The reason there was so many fire engines was because it is a high rise building.
‘We received just one call from a resident about the fire.
‘It could have been a lot different.’
No one was injured or required medical attention due to the blaze, and fire crews left the scene at 10.01am.
It is the second bin chute fire in the building in the last six months, with a crew from Southsea fire station being called out to deal with a blaze on the sixth floor in October.
