Youngest ever Havant mayor is set to be elected in borough's first virtual mayor making ceremony

Councillor Prad Bains will receive the mayoral chains from outgoing mayor Diana Patrick in the borough’s first socially-distanced, live-streamed event.
Cllr Bains will be elected during the virtual full council meeting on Wednesday at 5pm, and anyone can follow the ceremony on Skype.

Hide AdA former student at the Cowplain School, the 24-year-old was elected to represent the Hart Plain ward in 2018 and said that during his time as mayor he is keen to assist in the recovery of local businesses in the borough as well as engaging with young people about local issues.
Cllr Bains said: ‘It’s a real privilege that I will become the 47th mayor of Havant at our first ever virtual mayor making ceremony, that for the first time can be seen by anyone, anywhere.
‘The mayoralty is steeped in history and tradition which is hugely important, and balancing this with innovative ideas and adapting to the new normal is something I am keen to promote.
‘Coming from a different age group and from a more diverse background, it really shows that Havant promotes opportunities to all.’

Hide AdThe active sportsman, who gives time supporting young people at Portsmouth Cricket Club and Denmead Football Club, achieved his taekwondo black belt aged seven and has played Southern League cricket for Hambledon.
He drew attention in November when he saved three penalties as goalkeeper for Denmead in the Portsmouth Senior Cup against three divisions higher AFC Portchester.

Once elected, he will represent the borough and residents at official engagements, whether they are socially distanced or virtual.
Outgoing mayor Diana Patrick said: ‘It has been my privilege to serve as the mayor of the borough of Havant for the last 14 extraordinary months.

The event, which usually takes place in May, was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
