THIS WEEK IN 1971: Couple discoveredBentine wreckage
A Mr and Mrs Marsh of Cowplain, were walking through Queen Elizabeth Country Park, near Petersfield, when they discovered the wrecked light aircraft which had vanished on a flight to the Isle of Wight two months earlier. Both bodies were inside.
Mrs Marsh said: ‘It was in a very dense part of the forest. We passed the spot only three weeks ago and hadn’t seen anything,’
The near-intact cockpit and fuselage of the bright yellow Piper Cub had been hidden among thick woodland and dense undergrowth since August 28, when it reportedly nose-dived into the forest.
