Man with serious injuries taken to hospital after collision closes New Road in Portsmouth

Emergency services – including several police cars, paramedic crews, and a Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance critical care team – were called to the scene in New Road at 10.54am.
A man was treated for serious injuries at the scene and later at hospital following a collision involving a car, according to a spokeswoman from the South Central Ambulance Service.

Hide AdShe said: ‘We sent to the scene an ambulance crew, a paramedic officer and the Critical Care Car from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
‘They were assessing and treating a male patient for serious injuries.
‘He was assessed and treated at the scene by our crews and taken by ambulance to University Hospital Southampton.’
Police closed New Road from the junction of George Street to the junction of Northgate Avenue for more than four hours due to the incident.

Hide AdThe resident, who passed by the scene, said: ‘There are a lot of police about.
‘The police talking to the critical care said it was a cyclist who came out of the road and got hit by a car.
‘I couldn’t see a push bike, and staff in a shop down the road said it was a jogger.
‘I have lived here three years, and there have been two accidents.
‘But it’s not a regular occurrence.’

Hide AdPortsmouth City Council’s traffic management team asked people to avoid the area while the incident was being attended, before announcing the road as reopened at 4pm .
