Boxing author Andrew Fairley asked me to join him on the Guildhall steps so I saw it from a different perspective. My one regret was not having a camera to take a '˜now' photograph to compare it to last Saturday's wraparound photo in The News of the thousands in the square for the Armistice a century ago.
'¢Â My mention of fireworks last week reminded me they were rarely, if ever, let off on a Sunday. If bonfire night fell on a Sunday, fireworks were on the Saturday or Monday. Until the early '70s, Sunday was still a religious day.

Hide AdAnother rarity today are garden bonfires with a guy on top. My brother Arthur always made a guy with one of dad's old jackets and trousers. What happened when he looked for old clobber to garden in I cannot say, but with three sons I imagine he knew.
