But to achieve that, there’s an argument that boss Kenny Jackett needs to turn to some of his fringe players at a time when the games are coming thick and fast.
Too many players are out of form at present – hence the lack of consistency – and that could boil down to the number of matches being played.
We keep being told the Blues have the strength and depth to pull off promotion, so now is the time to use it with a few small adjustments to freshen the starting line-up up.
Of course, some players remain central and are required to battle their way through certain lean spells.
Meanwhile, injuries in key areas make options limited.
However, there’s still enough in this squad to make the necessary changes and to keep others on their toes as Pompey bid to remain in the promotion hunt.
Here’s a suggestion how Pompey could line up tonight...
1. Craig MacGillivray - goalkeeper
Ensured Pompey got something from Saturday's game against Gillingham with another late show of force. Must be wondering when that new contract offer will be made. Photo: JPIMedia
2. Jack Whatmough - right-back
Haji Mnoga deputised at right-back on Saturday - and while he did well, he showed how rash in a challenge he can be and signs of naivety. Pompey can't afford that against the likes of Josh Sims in what is an important game. Whatmough will provide extra protection defensively but will be limited going forward. Photo: JPIMedia
3. Sean Raggett - centre-back
Showed again on Saturday how important he is at both ends of the pitch. Another big game will be needed tonight against the likes of Omar Bogle and Fejiri Okenabirhie. Photo: JPIMedia
4. Rasmus Nicolaisen - centre-back
The Dane has certainly made the most of the opportunity he's been given following Jack Whatmough's recent red card. Looks an assured presence at the minute in the Blues' backline. Photo: JPIMedia
