They are now four points adrift from safety, with only Luton below them in the Championship table.
The Hatters had shared a 1-1 draw with Preston on a first game back for Nathan Jones as boss.
Last week, Luton announced former Pompey manager Paul Hart would be rejoining Jones, having previously served as his assistant at Stoke and Kenilworth Road.
