While many have impressed during their stays in the first half of the campaign, there are one or two more forgotten names who have had their spells cut short.
But how often have players had their spells on the south coast cut short at the midway stage?
We’ve taken a look at the eight loan stars who have had their time at Fratton Park brought to a premature end in January during the club’s time in League One.
1. Gassan Ahadme (2021-22)
The striker impressed while on trial in the summer of 2021, where he netted eight goals in four games in pre-season for the Blues. After arriving on loan from Norwich, Ahadme scored just once in the Papa John’s Trophy for Pompey and was sent back to Carrow Road in January. Cowley brought in Tyler Walker as the forward’s replacement and, on his return to the Canaries, was sold to Burton later in the window. Photo: Jason Brown
2. Miguel Azeez (2021-22)
The midfielder failed to live up to the hype when he arrived from Arsenal in the summer of 2021. The Gunners youngster featured 10 times for the Blues in all competitions before returning to the Emirates in January. He would go on to feature for Arsenal’s under-21’s side, where he netted once in eight appearances in the Premier League Two during the second half of the campaign. He's currently on a season-long loan at UD Ibiza. Photo: Joe Pepler
3. Cameron Pring (2020-21)
The forgotten left-back was a regular in Kenny Jackett’s side and helped guide the Blues to the top of League One table at Christmas. After impressing in the first part of the season at Fratton Park, Pring would be a major loss for the Blues when he was recalled to Bristol City following injury issues at Ashton Gate. Charlie Daniels arrived in his place but the former Bournemouth man failed to cover the absence of the defender. Photo: Joe Pepler
4. Andre Green (2018-19)
Green was another loanee to arrive with hype and expectations surrounding his name. Yet for the majority of the first half of the season, he found himself behind the in-form Ronan Curtis who proved a massive hit following his arrival from Derry in the summer. The winger was recalled by Aston Villa due to a lack of game time at Fratton Park, but his loss was felt with replacement Viv Solomon-Otabor not reaching the same levels. Photo: Joe Pepler
