Former South Downs student speaks of key to success
Harvey Lindsay, who has just completed an internship at music magazine The FADER, says education is important – but so is being bold and brave.
The university student studied creative media production – multimedia journalism at South Downs College, and initially didn’t do too well after starting in 2011.

Hide AdBut the 23-year-old, from Cosham, has since completed a number of work experience placements and got himself involved in a number of projects.
He said: ‘In my last year of college I lost all motivation, wasn’t turning up to class and was handing work in late.
‘I managed to turn things around and get into Southampton Solent University to study popular music journalism, where I took it upon myself to regain focus and put myself out there.
‘Most things I’ve done are because I’ve sent out lots of e-mails, tweeted editors, and spoke to people in the street.

Hide Ad‘During my time at The FADER I saw artist Professor Green outside the building.
‘I approached him, we had a chat, and he’s since come to me for advice on how to release his next track.’
Harvey is an aspiring music journalist and music talent scout. He has worked with DJ Semtex, Charlie Sloth, other teams at Radio1/1Xtra, Reprezent Radio, and had meetings with music labels.
He added: ‘Anyone can achieve something if they put their mind to it. Even those small steps you take daily mean something and grow your confidence, even when you’re not feeling motivated.’

Hide AdLouise Reed taught Harvey at South Downs. She said: ‘I am especially proud to see Harvey doing well. Seeing one of our students demonstrate tenacity and applying skills they’ve developed in pursuing a career makes teaching worthwhile.’
